They Know the Risk. We Live With the Fear.
When you own your home, you expect to be told what’s happening to it. Especially when that home has been flagged as unsafe. Especially when it’s undergoing cladding remediation, paid for through public funds and signed off by a national regulator. Yet across too many buildings – including Royal Artillery Quays (RAQ) – the people who live there are still left waiting, still left wondering, still left out.
On Friday 23rd May at 1pm, Cladding Matters returns with a live discussion hosted by Gareth Wax.
He’ll be joined as always by Steve Day, resident and campaigner at RAQ, and by me – Hamish McLay. Also joining us is Sue, another long-standing RAQ leaseholder. Together, we’ll talk through what it feels like to be living in homes that are supposedly being made safer, yet still surrounded by silence.
Residents have been asking for one basic thing – to see the plans and materials being used to replace the dangerous cladding. Not PR statements. Not vague summaries. Just clarity. What’s going up? What’s being signed off? And is it really safe?
Instead, the response has been silence. The builder won’t confirm what’s being installed. The council won’t clarify what’s been agreed. And the regulator has approved the works – yet won’t say on what basis. This leaves the residents – the people who own and live in the flats – with no say, no update, and no peace of mind.
We’ve heard many times that lessons were meant to be learned. Yet lessons mean nothing without transparency. Materials matter. Communication matters. Lives are being lived in uncertainty while key decisions happen elsewhere.
